London Outreach – Day 4 (Leicester Square)
The outreach began a little differently for me; this morning, I had the honour of leading the team devotions by speaking on “Do We Really Believe God Will Save the Lost?” After listening to God’s Word and prayer, we headed to Leicester Square for an afternoon of ministry.
Upon arrival, we were surprised to see there were no buskers nearby. This made it much easier for us to preach and share the gospel. I commenced the preaching by speaking on, “Are You Sure You’ll Go to Heaven?” A couple of people listened but then moved on.
Throughout the day, we had a constant stream of preachers proclaiming the gospel. We all presented differently, but our message was the same – the gospel! I can’t tell you who preached and what happened as I was busy speaking with the lost.
My first conversation of the day was with a Muslim man who first spoke to Richard, but then I was invited to join in. The man questioned why we needed a mediator between God and humanity. This discussion then developed into talking about the deity of Christ and the Trinity. It was a friendly conversation with the gospel being shared. The Muslim man took a booklet showing biblical proof that Jesus is God.
As I handed out tracts, I noticed something which reminded me of home. Two people were riding their bikes through the square while wearing NRL rugby league shirts. I stopped them and began to chat. Both took tracts.
After everyone else had preached, it came time for me to speak again. This time I preached on “The Way to Heaven.” Shortly after starting, two young men from Germany stopped to listen. I engaged them, and soon we were discussing the gospel. A small crowd gathered around as we looked at how someone could go to Heaven. Sadly, both young men had no knowledge of biblical truth; thankfully, they listened and took a copy of John’s Gospel and a card linking to the good news in German.
An Israeli young lady who practices Judaism listened to part of my preaching; she then spoke with Joe. She asked him why I was passionate. Joe used this to share the gospel. The lady said that in her religion Jesus is a sin. She was very friendly and said she would read Isaiah 53 to see if it speaks of Christ.
Two Muslim men who worked in a local shop also listened to the preaching; both received copies of John’s Gospel.
Towards the end of the outreach, a Muslim group set up next to us. They had a big box on wheels, a stand, and a loudspeaker. I got the feeling they were trying to intimidate us as they offered Qurans to people. My plan was to ignore them, but one of them called me over to talk.
I went over to the stand, and immediately the Muslim asked me, “Are you a Christian?” I told him I was. He then said, “Are you a practising Christian?” Again, I said yes. Then he asked, “How serious are you about Christianity?” I replied, “I’m a Christian minister, so I’m pretty serious.” His countenance changed upon hearing this. The man then started to proclaim that the Bible doesn’t teach that Jesus is God. I referred him to multiple passages that speak of the deity of Christ. He then claimed the Bible was incorrectly translated into English, which is why we think Jesus is God. So, I took out the Greek New Testament on my phone and asked him to show me where it was translated incorrectly.
Quickly, the Muslim man jumped to another topic. He said the Council of Nicaea invented the Trinity. I pointed him to the Nicaean documents to show that wasn’t the case. Finally, he said, “The Bible is corrupt!” I answered his objections and then began to question him. The man held up his hands and said, “I don’t like to argue. I’m not talking any further.” With that, he shook my hand and indicated I was to leave.
It is clear that these Muslims were preying on Christians who don’t know their Bible or apologetics. It reminded me of how important it is that we teach the Bible and instruct believers on how to defend the faith.
It was a good day in Leicester Square. Please pray for all those who heard the good news.
