Liverpool Outreach – Day 2
The weather forecast for tomorrow doesn’t look good, so we made the most of the good weather today. Due to the size of the team, I didn’t preach today, but I was ‘interviewed’ by John Hawley during his open-air session. For most of my time, I handed out tracts and chatted to people one-to-one.
The first lady I spoke with told me she was a good Catholic who was very traditional in her views. While she confessed that she wasn’t perfect, she did say that she was certainly good enough to merit Heaven. When I asked why she was ‘good enough,’ she began to detail her religious deeds. As we chatted, I used the Ten Commandments to reveal her sin and show that she wasn’t ‘good enough.' The lady didn’t like her sin being exposed, so she declared she would need to go to church more often. I explained that wouldn’t help her, then spoke to her about God’s love and the work of Jesus. The lady rejected the message, instead placing her hope in the Roman Catholic Church.
Next, I chatted with a young man who described himself as an Agnostic and a member of the Church of England. Despite his agnosticism, he wore a Saint Christopher’s medal and relied upon his baptism. The young man told me he wasn’t sure of the truth when it came to God, but he hoped by being good, nice, and kind, that if God existed, he would be accepted. I spent time undoing his trust in his own goodness by explaining the nature of sin. Then, as I went to share the good news, his phone rang. The young man told the person on the phone he was busy and couldn’t talk. He then turned back to me to hear the message of salvation. I explained what Jesus had done and urged the young man to repent and believe. He took a copy of John’s Gospel and a tract, promising to read them both.
During this conversation, John Hawley began to preach. A small crowd gathered to listen, and then he called me up to ask me a few questions in an interview style. This ‘interview’ allowed the gospel to be shared differently. At the end of this message, a few people took copies of the Gospel of John.
One young man who listened to the preaching seemed engaged, so I spoke with him. He told me he didn’t believe in God but was spiritual. For him, he liked the idea of Karma and doing good things. When I asked how good he was out of 10, he replied he was 7.5. Knowing that this young man was self-righteous, I thought of Romans 3:19-20, then used the Ten Commandments to show that he wasn’t good. As we went through the Law, the young man saw he wasn’t ‘7.5’ on the goodness scale; only when he realised his need did I take him to Jesus, the only good Saviour. The young man took a John’s Gospel and a tract. Please pray for him.
Day 2 of the Liverpool outreach was different from yesterday, but still the gospel spread. Please pray for those who heard the good news.
