Newquay Evangelism: “I’ve Never Heard this Before!”
It was a lovely and sunny afternoon as thirteen of us from Newquay Baptist Church made our way into the town to share the good news. As we walked into the town one of the men from the church commented on how encouraging it was that so many Christians had given up part of their Saturday afternoon with the sole purpose of making much of Jesus. As Pastor, I must admit I am greatly encouraged to see that evangelism is part of the DNA of our local fellowship. My prayer is that the Lord would use our church to reach many for Jesus.
Once we arrived in the high street, we set up the “Gospel Cart” and began to hand out gospel tracts. It was very clear to us that we had too many people for such a small area, so we separated into four different teams. Each team then headed to different parts of Newquay to share the gospel. I know that this was effective in reaching a wide range of people as by the end of the outreach many people would comment that they had already been given a gospel tract.
Our church secretary, Ian, reported that in his team about 90% of people who were offered gospel literature took it. He also was able to have a twenty-minute gospel conversation with an atheist named Sam. At first Sam seemed a bit flippant, but by the end of the discussion he said that it was the best conversation he’d had in ages. He also indicated that he would come along to church services. Please pray that the gospel seed would take root in Sam’s heart.
There seems to have been a few atheists about today as James was also able to have a good chat to a man that I had spoken to previously. Whenever we see this atheist, he stops to chat; he is a friendly older man, so it is always a pleasure to spend time with him. Please ask the Father to draw him to the Son.
Since the town centre was being covered with gospel tracts, I decided to test out some new kit that I have. Over recent months I have been thinking it would be helpful to record gospel conversations that we are having on the streets, so today for the first time I deployed the camera.
As I walked around the town centre, I came across a couple who were sitting outside a coffee shop. I asked if they’d like to be interviewed, a lady named Grace agreed, but her friend declined. Grace was brought up with a religious church background, but she admitted that she had never heard the gospel. In fact, at the end of our conversation she admitted that she had never heard the message of Jesus before. As we parted ways, she took a Gospel of John; I later found out that afterwards she spoke to a lady from our church who invited Grace along to a service.
The video of the conversation is below. This was the first time I have interviewed and recorded, so I was a bit distracted. But we trust that the Lord will use this footage to train the Church, and also to reach out to the lost.
Praise God for yet another day in which we were able to declare the wonder of Christ. Please pray for all those that we spoke to, and also for those who received tracts.
