A Wet and Cold Day in Plymouth
It is always a comfort to rest in the sovereignty of God. As we approached Plymouth it was clear that today’s outreach was going to be a challenge due to the rain and cold weather, but we take comfort in the fact that our God is the one who causes the rain to fall (Matthew 5:45). Upon arriving in the city centre, I discovered a busker was in our normal area, so we moved further down the road until we found a sheltered location that provided some respite from the rain. Today, we had a team of eight out sharing the gospel – some were experienced in this form of evangelism, and others were hitting the streets for the first time.
I was the first preacher for the day; since we were near a Christmas market, I decided to use the open-air message “Name That Carol.” It was the first time I have used this message, but it seemed to work. In this open-air talk I took three quotes from well-known Christmas carols and then tied them to the gospel. A few people stopped to listen as the good news was proclaimed.
After I had finished preaching, Matt Rolfe began to preach. He used trivia to draw a crowd, and then he preached to those who gathered. A couple of young lads listened intently and had some good questions after the open air.
Even though it was raining, the gospel still went forth. Tracts were handed out, one-to-one conversations took place, and the gospel was preached. Little by little the Kingdom advances!
