How to Be a Gospel Light on Halloween

There is one night a year when a mission field walks right to your front door and waits for you to give them the good news. On 31st October, young people will come to your house dressed as ghosts, ghouls, and other demonic creatures to celebrate the darkness. How will you, as a Christian, be a light?

Some Christians go out for the evening or pretend they aren’t home. Others open the door and respond to the children in a grumpy manner, showing that they have the joy of Jesus so deeply hidden in their hearts that it would take a digger to find it!

I want to suggest there is a better way to deal with the darkness: turn on the light! When children come to your door saying, ‘Trick or Treat’, respond in a friendly and loving manner, then wish them a “Happy Reformation Day” (which takes place on the same day). Then, give them a little bag of goodies containing sweets/candy and a gospel tract.

As a family, we have used this form of evangelism for many years, and we are yet to have anyone complain. In fact, when wishing people a ‘Happy Reformation Day’, we’ve had parents ask what that is all about, which opened the door to a gospel conversation.

What we do is buy resealable plastic bags, then put several sweets/candy in them. We make sure to be generous in our giving of goodies. The children should be amazed at what they are given, as this gift will prepare the way for the gospel tract (Proverbs 18:16). I know of others who include more items, such as a Gospel of John and a Scripture colouring book with crayons.

These little bags of light will carry God’s truth into many homes that only know darkness. Perhaps the tract you include will be the means the Lord uses to bring a child, or even an entire family, to faith.

Instead of hiding away from the darkness which knocks on your door, be the light and spread the light. Make the most of this evil evening to tell people of the goodness of the Lord Jesus.
